Death Metal is probally one of the most unknown and unpopular genre's there is today, even though it is very hard to play and requires immense skill. The solo's are usually very high pitched and are fairly common. Bassist's play a big part in death metal and are usually extremely skilled. e.g alex webster of cannibal corpse. Most metal fans that dont like Death metal are usually dickheads who have never sat down and listened to the genre throughly before. Lyrics span from crazy gore and horror to politics to stuff about satan and the devil. Some people say that Death Metal is a bunch of noise, they are cunts who cant listen to music properly because even though the usually low vocals may make it sound like a mash of music it is really not!
may i mention i am only 13 and death metal is my favourite genre which may surprise some of you old-school death metallers who think death metal is nearly dead, which i hope it isnt! My favourite Death Metal bands are Cannibal Corpse, In Flames, At The Gates, Deicide, Carcass and six feet under

Although it seems in many places Death metal is a simply brutal primitive form of music, dealing with gore and satan and what not. There IS a form of it highly intelligent, and insanely technical. The Death Metal Bands from Quebec/Canada. This hermetic genre comprises the like of Cryptopsy, Martyr, Neuraxis, Quo Vadis, Gorguts, Spasm, Kataklysm, Unhuman (VERY undergrounds band, extreme technical death/grind), Disembarkation (also very underground, very progressive and technical, which all have the main quality of hyperblast-beats, complex brutal and technical riffing, and surprisingly very little refference to gore and the likes (with certain exceptions). Main themes lie in human psyche, self-developement, emotions, life and even some metaphysics. Others are pure reject of religion and anything conformising.

Well worth a listen to anyone not initiated to this incredible genre of music.
Cryptopsy follow Cannibal Corpse, yet push the limit farther by being more brutal and far more technical, not to mention having less pointless lyrics for the most part.

Death metal, and in fact, most of modern metal originated from underground bands during the hair metal days, and most of the bigger ones hail from Sweden, particularly Gothenburg. The exceptions to this are nu-metal, which is based in more than one way off of grunge, and classic/stoner rock. The music generally consists of screams and yells, more high-pitched than not. They also have utter walls of guitar, accompanied by difficult-to-play leads, and drumwork second only to jazz. Also tends to have a recurring bass line; and guitars are oftened tuned down two steps or more. They sometimes tend to have a softer side as well, with orchestras or pianists. Lyrics, however hard to hear, are normally about important issues relating to the state of things, personal conflict, or political anthems. Major names from this genre: Arch Enemy, Opeth (much more of a softer side than most, one of the best bands there is), Soilwork, In Flames, Dark Tranquil(l)ity, etc. On another note, people who listen to nothing but metal tend to be fiercely defensive of their favorite bands, and do not like change, as any In Flames fan will tell you. They tend to have a love/hate relationship with any band they listen to. I personally don't think there is such thing as a bad song, just a less good one.
Death Metal: Arch Enemy, Opeth, Soilwork, In Flames, Dark Tranquil(li)ty, Darkest Hour, At the Gates, etc.
Not Death Metal: Emperor, Cradle Of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, Hypocrisy, Avenged Sevenfold, Stratovarius, Rhapsody, Korn, Linkin Park, Breaking Benjamin, Mudvayne, etc.
Slipknot has there own genre, because by most standards, they're a little bit of everything...World Music?
