The reason why they call it "jacket" is because the level of comfort he feels from accepting another man's child can be compared to the comfort one gets from wearing a jacket, suggesting that he has no idea he's just been duped. It has been culturally engrained in the psyche of the Jamaican people that "jacket" is a lighthearted topic, and one deserving the ridicule of the public, often at the expense of the man receiving the jacket. It is very common to assume that if a light-skinned baby is born to two dark-skinned parents, that the baby must then be a jacket.
