When you are competing against someone and you beat them or pull a move that defeats them.

I was cycling with my mate and continued to attack and make it harder and harder, eventually he blew (could do any more) and I "put'em in the gutter" and beat his sorry ass .

I pushed him wider and wider across the road until he had to back off as i had "put'em in the gutter"
