What people think/see: people who wear a lot of black and have a lot of eyeliner, pretty quiet and a tad scary, probably super depressed and freaky they listen to music about death and want the world to end.
What people don’t see/real definition: people who are most comfortable in darker, less revealing clothes, people who like song that have meaningful/emotional lyrics but also have good music. People who are shunned a lot because they look different even though they aren’t generally that mean/dark.
Sometimes emos are depressed and sometimes they aren’t. (Just like every other categorization of human being.) emos are more in touch with their emotional side and tend to understand deeper more abstract philosophical ideas, not because they’re morbid, but because they’re intelligent and they understand things other people can’t. They often are misunderstood and choose to express themselves with poetry/music.

“That guy but be goth and like depressed or something he’s wearing all black and being super creepy isn’t he corner.”
“Nah he’s emo. Let’s go talk to him I bet he’s just a little shy and awkward. He’s probably an interesting person.”

Get the Emomug. A derogatory label for someone who is sad. I'm writing this to clear some things up about this label.
1) A person who listens to bands such as My Chemical Romance or Black Veil Brides is NOT "emo"
2) A person who is depressed is NOT "emo"
3) A person who dresses a certain way is NOT "emo".
4) Everybody who seems to make fun of people just for feeling how they feel, or liking what they like, or dressing how they dress, can fuck themselves. You don't see me going around making fun of you for listening to Lil' Wayne or wearing Nikes and playing basketball, now do you? The people you define as "Emo" have never done anything to you, and therefore you should stop shoving your head up your ass. Making fun of someone for self-harming or telling them to kill themselves is unacceptable and disgusting. Think about what kind of human that makes you.
5) If people call you emo, or you're suicidal, know that I'm always here to talk. They're not any better than you and you don't deserve the shit you get. Stay strong, and don't let them get to you. Don't be ashamed for liking a certain type of music or dressing a certain way. You be you, and don't let anyone bring you down for it.

Get the Emomug. For your information this was written by a punk and not an emo, there's a difference
Emo or Emotive is a music movement that began in the mid-1980s in Washington DC. The "emo" genre is more of an umbrella of music genres such as post hardcore, pop punk, indie and other styles. The emo genre is often fused with other styles creating genres such as emo pop, emoviolence, and melodic emocore. There is also the emo subgenre of scream which uses a style of "screaming" along with or as the main vocals.
Then of course there's the stereotypical emo, skinny jeans, wears black and is an emotional mess. Wrong, most emos are not like that. They are more or less better in touch with their emotions than that girl on the cheer team. Yes, emos do tend to dress a certain way but every emo is different and will express themselves differently. A British metalcore emo will wear Asking Alexandria tanktops, a post hardcore emo will wear a Sleeping With Sirens sweatshirt, a powerviolence emo will wear a Kuza shirt, everyone is different.
Deal with it.

Not all emos are emotional messes, some are just catholic whores currently enjoying a congress out of wedlock with their black jewish boyfriend who work at a military abortion clinic.

Get the Emomug. A subculture mainly consisting of younger people who listen to rock, metal, punk, etc. They get lot's of hate and are called fake a lot, but I can assure you, they aren't depressed because they are emo, they are emo because they are depressed. Actually, you don't have to be depressed to be emo. They mostly turn to their music to cope with their issues, for the lyrics are deeply meaningful. If people would stop making fun of these bands because they have a different sound than others and listen to the lyrics and pay attention to them, you'd find the meaning. Emos usually have a darker style of band shirts, skinny jeans, and Vans with hints of neon, and the style is less for attention and more for finding more emos like themselves. The most common emo stereotype is that they all are suicidal and cut themselves, which is extremely untrue.
1.
Person 1: Ew look an emo!
Person 2: Hey emo! Go cut yourself
"Emo": I'll cut your throat
Person 3: I'll slit your throat and fuck the wound!
*emo and person 3 fall in love because Slipknot*
2.
"Emo": (bad day) I'm gonna listen to Pierce the Veil, Black Veil Brides, and Of Mice & Men even though society calls them all emo and horrible
PTV: Darling, you'll be okay
BVB: I believe that we all fall down sometimes
OM&M: You're not alone, you're with me
PTV: I wanna hold your hand so tight, I'm gonna break my wrist
BVB: Saviour will be there when you are feeling alone
OM&M: Don’t give up, baby I know that it's shaky

Get the emomug. The term "Emo" is used as counterculture; it is an abreviation of the word "emotional". Emo it's defining not only an attitude, but also a fashion that are coming from emocore (emo music). Emocore is a combination between hardcore and punk music which was very popular in Washington DC in the late 80's. The emo culture continued to develop between '90 and '00, reaching the height of its popularity today.
