The stupidest word ever created. Meant to describe a band that suddenly got popular. Suddenly, that band's music isn't good anymore, because they're too popular. Never to be used unless you want to sound like a moron who has no idea what you're talking about.

Get the sell out mug.Extreme intoxication through alcohol consumption. Typically characterised by the inability to respond coherently to even simple questions. Derived from 'shell of a man'. One step up the scale of drunkenness from battered.
That was an excellent night. There was loads of beer and I pushed through battered to achieve shell.

Get the shell mug.A word used by stuck up teenagers who think that if music is popular and the album gets into the top 10 then the band are automatically are rubbish and are terrible.
One of the most 'sellout' bands of our time is Green Day. I am a Green Day fan and I will freely admit that but I have friends who in 2000 liked Green Day but since American Idiot claim 'Green Day are shit! They are such sellouts!' And these people haven't even heard of Kerplunk. I don't think that any band has sold out. Every band sets out to make music and to hopefully be famous. Everyone wants a limo. Everyone wants £1m record contract.
Being rich doesn't mean you make rubbish music. It doesn't mean you don't care anymore. It just means you are rich and have a lot of fans.
And Good Charlotte? MTV from the start in my opinion.

(Silly person) Omg I love this band! I'll always love Green Day!
(Silly person 3 or 4 years down the line) I hate this band! They have never made a good song in their lives. I always hated them! Green Day are such sellouts.

Get the sellout mug.The mantra of every salesperson alive, they promise the client unachievable results if they just sign on the line. Once the dream is sold, the operations team then needs to unravel the web of deceit sold and "recalibrate" the client's expectations (i.e., the nightmare).
Todd: " How did we lose our biggest client last week?"
Tyler: "It seems once they talked with Operations they realized there was no way they could make that deadline. Another classic example of 'sell the dream, live the nightmare."

Get the Sell the dream, live the nightmare mug.The opposite of buy-in. When a person or group cannot actually commit to something unless they are given something in return, usually for much greater that its actual value, and shamelessly at a ridiculous cost. The seller invests nothing, but lies about ownership when he or she is actually bought at the expense of the organization. There is no sense of pride, only personal gain.
The labor union cannot commit to anything, but if you give them over time or comp time, they will sell-in to anything, just so they can say they have ownership without actually investing their effort or commitment.
