Where a one-upper tells you a bigger and better story, usually by making it up, a Legitimate One-Upper doesn't make anything up because they really are bigger and better than you.

It is mostly used in a lighthearted manner. However, if something extremely questionable has been done, and the phrase is uttered, it carries much more weight.

Your friend Tyler keeps kicking your ass in COD, and you are getting frustrated. The next time you are killed, you exclaim:

One of your classmates, Ethan, has just taken food right off of your plate, and has immediately started eating it.
