A common phrase in the early twentieth century meaning someone who is all over the place whether literally traveling or whose mind is scattered. (See P.G. Wodehouse and Dorothy L. Sayers works.) The saying comes from the bird of the same name which is a wading bird with a drumming display flight. The phrase “like a snipe” evolved over the next 100 years to mean any number of things that are sneaky i.e. long-range sharp shooters and/or girls on the make, or anyone who takes advantage of others in a either a mean or sneaky way.
Example: “You were dodging all over the States like a snipe and we couldn’t get at you.”—Bertie Wooster.

1. A more specific derivative of nerd sniping, where a troll credits / refers to some content that contains incorrect environmental claims designed to to elicit a response that occupies the respondents or otherwise takes them offline.
That copium article post you posted in the collapse forum was excellent green sniping! In the two hours it took to debunk all its claims, attention had moved elsewhere and no one followed up.

The act of taking city folk out into the wilderness to catch “snipe”, which while it is a real bird, the ones they’re catching aren’t. Give them a pillow case and lead them into a field and say you’re gonna scare the “snipe” to em
“So Kyle, have you ever gone snipe hunting?”
“What’s that?”
“I’ll take you out tonight, just bring a pillow case with you”
“What’s that?”
“I’ll take you out tonight, just bring a pillow case with you”

Cherry sniping is the act of picking out a small section of an opponent's argument in a debate and focusing all attention on that specific argument in the response while discarding the rest.
The purpose of this is to shift the subject into a more easily-defendable position and deflect valid points made by the opponent.
Most commonly this occurs in cycles, with one participant's responses being asinine one-liners while the other's are educated and well-sourced, albeit lengthy.
