The process of making up a story to fit the facts as they develop.

Questioning a man suspected of murdering his wife, police asked him when the last time he saw her was. He answered that he last saw her when he left to go to the grocery store to pick up a few things. After the police reminded him that her car was still in the garage the man added that he remembered her saying that her friend was going to pick her up to do some shopping. Later after the wife's body was found in the husband's office dumpster the police asked him if he had any further caseyfaction to add to his story.
