Making sure Sonic gets blue balls is the only way to collect all the chaos emeralds, and access the final level where you regain the master emerald from Dr. Robotnik (who, to obtain it, had presumably spent the entire two games getting blue balls). Getting blue balls is so popular that Sega decided to include it as a hidden bonus in Sonic & Knuckles. Connecting that game to the original Sonic the Hedgehog grants access to a mini game with 134,217,728 randomly generated levels (constructed from predefined chunks of level), allowing a player to endlessly get blue balls. For some unknown reason, the original title text of this level, "GET BLUE BALLS", was changed while the game was in beta, to the final release's "GET BLUE SPHERES".
