The South

Made the butt of jokes by Northerners. The South is filled with hard workers, some of the most hospitable people you will come across, friendly and down to earth, and are surrounded by beautiful mountains. It is also filled with people who can build, successfully grow gardens, and if disaster struck, generally live off the land. Because they have the wit and skill and determination to do those things that Northerners do not. The South is not full of racists or dumb people, the South has educated people and civilization---also the part of the United States where the most common sense is used. People are appreciative of what they have, and work hard to get it. They have manners and morals, and is arguably one of the calmest places to live in America.

The South tends to have its own feel to it. From hustling cities to winding country roads. From Victorian-styled homes to modern-day houses. It has charm and natural beauty. The people are proud of who they are.
"Stupid Southern idiots. Don't they know how to read or write or even speak?"
"Well, obviously. Nashville, Tennessee, is actually called the Athens of the South because of all of its colleges and universities."

"What's so special about the South?"
"It's naturally charming. It is also home of the Linville Caverns, Grandfather Mountain, the birthplace of Jazz, the Biltmore Estate and Gardens, and more."

I'm proud to be a Southerner. Even if that makes me a hillbilly, a redneck, a flag waver, a backwards fool . . . it doesn't matter! I am proud to say I am a Southerner.

the south will rise again

A rallying cry used by Confederacy enthusiasts who believe the southern United States is superior. Often, those who use this phrase believe the American Civil War was "about States' rights, not slavery". In fact, the Constitution of the Confederacy was nearly word-for-word identical to the US Constitution, but actually *restricted* States' rights by requiring every State to be a slave State.

Furthermore, there was no "Southern identity" in the United States until abolition became a major political issue, and rebel states saw slavery as more a matter of property rights, not State's rights. The States' rights issue was invented by modern Southern apologists; no real historian takes it seriously.

In short, this is a slogan for southerners who believe they should "take pride in their heritage" even though their heritage includes a legacy of horrifying behavior.
My buddy Jeb told me it's not racist to say "the south will rise again", but I know better.

the south will rise again

A term used by hardcore southerners in reference to former power the south had in the mid 1800's. Thought to be racist or redneck by most of the non southern persuasion it is actually a term that has come true in some sense seeing that The south is, in our day in age, a cultural, industrial and economic power. Cities including Atlanta, Charlotte, Nashville, Knoxville, Memphis, Charlston (one of the busiest ports in the country), Jacksonville, Mobile, and Montgomery are all cities of industrial and cultural importance. This Phrase is often represented in unison with the confederate battle flag and associated by the ignorant people of non southern descent (aka northeastern folk) as being a symbol of racism and biggotry, a common misconception as the civil war was not about slavery, but states rights; thus making the confederate flag a symbol of states rights and their sense of independant identity.

The South Bronx

A borough in New York City notorious for its high crime, poverty, fires, culture, and music. Before the end of World War II the South Bronx had a large Jewish and Italian community. After the war and the white flight, the community became composed largely of Puerto-Ricans, Puerto-Rican Americans, and African Americans. In the 70s arson swept the region and could be seen from Yankee stadium. The fires left some parts of the area looking like a war zone. (See the movie Wolfen). The South Bronx has had a high crime rate, but began declining in the 90s due to tighter police control and peace negotiations among enemy gangs(The opposite of what happened to the Los Angeles ghettos during that time). The city has spawned break dancing and some of the earliest forms of Hip-Hop Music like Afrika Bambaata and GM Flash. It has also contributed to the Freestyle (Latin Hip-Hop) and House music movements. Several celebrities and stars came from the South Bronx which include Italian-American actor Al Pachino, Nuyorican actress Jennifer Lopez, "kings of Bachata" Aventura, salsa artists Willie Colon and La India, and several members of the Texas Western Miners with the first all-Black line up in the NCAA.
1)"The Bronx is burning..." Howard Cosell.
2)
Guy 1: Yo , dat movie, Hangin' with the Homeboys, was slammin'!
Guy 2: Word. It took place in da South Bronx.
Guy 1: Da-yum dat place is ghetto.
3) Although Ricardo Tubbs is a New York street cop from the South Bronx he is now working Miami vice with Crockett.
