Taken from the West African (Akan) day name, Kudjo, which is a the name for a male born on Monday. In areas like the Gullah region of South Carolina where some aspects of West African language has been preserved, using day names like Cujo ond Cuffee (taken from Kofi, the name for a male born on Friday) is not uncommon.

Cujo is my son; he was born late Tuesday night.
