Ancient Rome

The birth place of Western Civilization.

Located about 50 miles from the Mediterranean Sea in the center of the Italian peninsula on its west coast is where Ancient Rome began as a small village. It grew to a larger Kingdom quickly and then into the Roman Republic and then the Roman Empire.

Ancient Rome began possible as early as the 10Th century with the founding of the city by the legendary twin brothers Romulus and Remus.

The Ancient Roman Empire was split in two in the 3rd century by the Emperor Diocletian. This created a western and eastern empire which was ruled from the city of Rome. The Emperor controlling the Western Empire and the co-emperor controlling the east. Constantine moved the seat of the empire to Constantinople in 330 AD.

The end of the Western Roman Empire in 476 AD saw the end of the cities power as Europe fell into the Dark Ages.

The Eastern Roman empire continued from its bas in Constantinople until 29 May 1453

Junge Römer

A slang term popular in early/mid 1980s Germany and Austria, which was the equivalent of the English term, "Yuppie". This neologism was used in much the same way to mock a new wave of American-influenced young urban sophisticate twenty-somethings in Austria and West Germany at the time.

Translated from German, "junge Römer" means "young Roman(s)" (the term can denote both singular - when used for a male - and plural), likening the heightened style of living of these young Europeans to that of many of the extravagant upperclass Romans in Rome's Golden Age.

The term was popularized further by Austrian pop/rock singer, Falco, in 1984 with his song by the same name, which glamorized the junge Römer lifestyle (Falco counted himself among this group of people).
From Falco's, Junge Römer:
"Junge Römer, die Nacht ist jung wie ihr,
vergesst das Morgen."

Translation: Young Romans, the night is young like you, forget the morning.

when in rome

The full phrase is "When in Rome, do as the Roman's do." But it has become shortened so often, some people don't get it anymore. It's an analogy making use of the strict rule of the ancient Roman empire, and synonomous with "Going with the flow," or doing something because everyone else is doing it.
"Hey, thanks for coming to my party. Do you want a beer?" Said Joe.

"When in Rome," Bob exclaimed, as he poored beer into his cup.
