In the months leading up to its release, the game became controversial for its censorship of the late Akira Toriyama's character designs and the removal of gendered terms when referring to the protagonist. The controversy reached its peak when a viral interview with Dragon Quest creator Yuji Hori revealed that the changes were made solely to comply with Western regulations, coupled with developer and publisher Square Enix's attempts to scrub the video from the Internet. Upon release, the game sold moderately well but was poorly received by many fans of the series due to the aforementioned changes.
Everyone who was involved in censoring Mr. Toriyama's work for Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake needs to apologize at his grave.
