Catfishing could be used to spy on a boyfriend or girlfriend.
It could be used to fraudulently trick someone into sending money.
It could be used to lure someone to a location.
Catfishing, in the worst-case scenario, has led to people being abducted and murdered.
A regular "catfish" is not gender specific. Women as well as men have been known to be catfish.

A penis catfish is a menace to society. They lack moral ethics and will do anything to benefit themselves, such as lie, cheat and steal.

Get the penis catfishmug. Catfish is used to describe when a man or woman uses old or retouched pictures on social media sites to alter their current present day appearance in order to attract or gain attention. Usually utilized when one is seeking a relationship while being deceptive.
That girl catfish her way around online to seek companionship by using photos of herself that were obviously altered because in person she didn't appear anything like the pictures she has uploaded on social media.

Get the catfishmug. When you don't tell someone they're adopted their entire lives. They submit their DNA to ancestry and people tell them not to that it's fake and doesn't work anyway. And then their DNA comes back not matching their family and you tell them that it must be contaminated or they mixed up the kits.
The adoption catfishing ended at her adoptive mom's funeral. A well-meaning relative told her and now she gets to deal with her grief, the shock of finding out she's adopted and no one to ask questions to.
