Lol

Abbreviation for 'Laugh Out Loud'. Most of the time used to make people think that you laughed, but you know that you're sitting there with less facial expression than Kristen Stewart.

LOL

An abbreviation that some day stood for 'laughing out loud'. Boomers still use that definition but that word has evolved. LOL with all capital letters means being in a shock.

However lol with all small letters means "Lack of laughter." It is usually used when just acknowledging someones message.
Jake: "Dude, this is Kate my girlfriend."
Paul: "LOL, you are no longer a nerd, nice."

Jake: "Dude, I found a cool place to hang out with our boys."
Paul: "lol, cool."
