Epistemological Multiperspectivism

The methodological commitment to knowing from multiple, irreconcilable perspectives simultaneously, accepting that no single viewpoint captures everything and that different perspectives yield different knowledge. A historical event is simultaneously a sequence of facts (empiricism), a narrative construction (hermeneutics), a site of trauma (psychoanalysis), and a tool of power (critique). Multiperspectivism doesn't try to synthesize these into one master perspective—it holds them in tension, moving between them as understanding requires. It's binocular vision for knowing.

Infinite Multiperspectivism

The view that any phenomenon requires an infinite number of perspectives for complete understanding, and since infinite perspectives are impossible, complete understanding is impossible. But incomplete understanding can still be deep, useful, beautiful. Infinite Multiperspectivism embraces the impossibility of total knowledge as liberation: you'll never get it all, so stop trying. Instead, collect as many perspectives as you can, hold them in tension, move between them, and appreciate that the phenomenon exceeds any finite set of views. Reality is infinite; your grasp is finite. That's not failure—that's the situation.

Scientific Multiperspectivism doesn't try to synthesize these into one master perspective—it holds them in productive tension, moving between scales and methods as questions demand. It's science that has learned humility from its own complexity.

The theory that knowledge is best pursued through multiple, irreducible perspectives held in tension rather than synthesized into a single view. Different perspectives reveal different aspects of reality, and no meta-perspective can capture them all without loss. Epistemological Multiperspectivism doesn't seek the One True Perspective—it seeks a rich network of partial views, each illuminating what others miss, collectively approximating something like wisdom. It's the epistemology of binocular vision applied to everything: two eyes give depth because they don't see the same thing.

A legal case might need formal logic for statutes, narrative logic for witness testimony, and ethical logic for consequences. Logical Multiperspectivism doesn't seek the one true logic for a problem—it moves between logical frameworks, using each for what it reveals, letting them check and complicate each other. It's logic that has learned that one lens is never enough.

Scientific Multiperspectivism

A philosophical framework holding that scientific knowledge is inherently multiple—that reality can be validly understood through multiple, distinct scientific perspectives that may not be reducible to a single unified account. Scientific multiperspectivism goes beyond perspectivism (which acknowledges that knowledge is from a perspective) to insist that multiple perspectives are not just inevitable but desirable—that different scientific approaches, theories, and frameworks reveal different aspects of reality, and that integrating multiple perspectives yields deeper understanding than any single one. This framework draws on examples where phenomena require multiple descriptions: light as both wave and particle; mind as both neural activity and lived experience; ecosystems as both mathematical models and lived habitats. Scientific multiperspectivism doesn't claim that all perspectives are equally valid, but that validity is plural—that different questions, different scales, different contexts call for different scientific perspectives, and that the goal is not to eliminate multiplicity but to understand how perspectives relate, complement, and sometimes contradict.

Epistemological Multiperspectivism

Epistemological multiperspectivism goes beyond acknowledging different perspectives to insist that knowledge is irreducibly plural: scientific knowledge, experiential knowledge, traditional knowledge, intuitive knowledge, and embodied knowledge are different kinds of knowing, each valid in its own domain, each revealing aspects of reality that others miss. This framework draws on examples where different epistemic practices yield complementary insights: indigenous ecological knowledge and Western scientific ecology; meditative self-knowledge and psychological assessment; artistic understanding and historical analysis. Epistemological multiperspectivism doesn't claim that all knowledge claims are equally valid, but that validity is plural—that different epistemic perspectives have different standards, different strengths, and different domains, and that genuine understanding requires engaging with multiple ways of knowing rather than reducing all to one.
