hard peg

In economics, a policy in which the authorities insist on some permanent, precise guarantee of the value of the local currency to some other thing: a unit measure of gold, the US dollar, the euro, or the pound. Historically, the US dollar had a hard peg to gold from 1946 to 1971, while other currencies in the developed world had a hard peg to the US dollar. Since 1971, most of the world's money is in floating currency (whose relative value is set by the free market).

hard 10

Refers to the attractiveness rating scale of 1-10. "10" being the rating and "hard" designating that the person being rated is solidly, without doubt deserving of that rating. Hard can be used as the prefix to any of the 1-10 numbers. Its opposite being "soft 10"

Dang, see that girl over there? That booty makes her a hard 10 for sure!

The hidden purpose of all female fashion and the "beauty industry" that supports it -- namely, to help to generate male erections. Sometimes abbreviated to "the H.O. Factor," it is what some feminists treat with disdain and attempt to subvert by refusing to wear make-up. Every fashion designer, male or female, recognizes its importance, however, as, instinctively, do all heterosexual women.

She: I looooooove the new Chloe collection, especially those floor-length dresses and baggy blouses with long sleeves!
He: But they completely lack the H.O. Factor.
She: The whaaaat??

Hard Drive Dump

A negative term for a release by an electronic musician, indicating that it is of mediocre quality. The word refers to the fact that many electronic musicians keep unreleased demos on their hard drives, and suggests that a new release is little more than a "dump" of some older, inferior tracks. The accusation is often used in the case of albums that appear to have been released in a hurry, as a stop-gap, or to fulfill a contractual obligation.

When Aphex Twin released the double-album Drukqs in 2001, many critics, noticing the varying quality and uneven sequencing of the release, accused him of putting out a hard drive dump to fulfill contractual obligations with Warp Records. Others hailed it as his masterpiece.
