Optimization Trap

When trying to improve everything actually makes life worse. The endless tweaking, tracking, and hacking that leaves you more stressed than before. Productivity apps, fitness gadgets, even parenting advice—sometimes “optimizing” just optimizes the anxiety.

I bought five different apps to manage my schedule, and now I don’t have time to do anything. Classic optimization trap.

Tinbergen trap

Tinbergen Trap is a setup where someone uses “an exaggerated signal to trigger a natural reaction”… then punishes the person for it.

Tinbergen trap is named after scientist Niko Tinbergen, who showed animals fall for “supernormal stimuli” like giant fake eggs or female fireflies faking mating flashes to lure males to eat them.

*In human culture, it’s when influencers or clout-chasers bait attention (like filming in gyms) and then shame people for responding in completely normal ways.

Digital trap box

A term created by Selamawit Solomon (2025) to describe how people are trapped inside the internet creating, thinking, and living within digital platforms instead of the real world.

People who run these apps want us to be trapped in this digital box. They don’t want us to think out of it that’s why I call it a Digital Trap Box.

Cambodian Finger Trap

Requires 2 or more men. One man will insert his finger into the other man’s urethra and vise versa. You’ll both then try to pull your finger out, but the pain will cause the urethra to clench down on the finger.

Trap Psychosis

The phenomenon of users on Booru-style websites tagging or describing canonically transgender, non-binary, or genderfluid fictional characters as "traps", "femboys", "crossdressers", or, rarely, "women" if the character was born female.

Taiwanese mouse trap
