An inside joke derived from a popular "meme format", the origins of which are often procured from a normal (not inside) joke, a celebrity's actions, social media (youtube, 4chan, facebook, etc.), regular media (popular video games, movies, tv shows, songs, etc.), or even other memes.
Memer (One who creates or otherwise spreads memes): "Hey mom, check out this nice meme!"
Memer's Mom: "You're adopted."

A joke, that is made of a picture (often a stock picture or a movie/series screenshot) and text, to give it a meaning. Memes are popular among millenials and gen z's, due to it being invented during their lives.
IMPORTANT: minion memes are widely considered bad.

Basically an inside joke for frequent internet users. It can take the form of a video, image, audio or just an ongoing joke surrounding a person, event, concept, trend, etc. It is frequently joked about in various forms until it becomes old and overused, and isn't considered funny anymore. Then it becomes a "stale" or "dead" meme.

1. an element of a culture or system of behaviour passed from one individual to another by imitation or other non-genetic means.
2. an image, video, piece of text, etc., typically humorous in nature, that is copied and spread rapidly by Internet users, often with slight variations.
They’re pictures, videos and texts showing content that only people who understand the references find comical. They can start out as funny videos that got really popular (e.g. hit or miss) or a picture someone shared that millions of people saw (e.g. the doge).

Charlie: Hey, remember when everyone was talking about that meme ‘hit or miss’?
Ben: Yeah, I even heard someone shout it in Tesco, and I replied “I guess they never miss, huh?”.
Charlie: LMAO really?
Ben: Yep.
