Since 1991 Sonic has taken on a variety of different forms from comics to anime and had a mass of different voices the best being Ryan Drummond from Sonic adventure 1 - Sonic heroes. Recently he has been given some really stupid gimmicks like a werehog form, a sword, and for some reason chip (see sonic unleashed). These have made many once die hard Sonic fans loose interest in the little blue hero and either stop all together or go to Mario and Nintendo for saving.
His main rival is Dr Eggman/Robotnik who is always after the gems of the world, the Chaos Emeralds, to use to enslave the world and defeat his little blue nemesis. He was given a super form in 1992 which has been directly linked to Goku and Super Saiyan from Dragonball Z.
Sonic has been on a slippery slope downhill recently with games such as Sonic 06 on 360 and PS3 being more full of glitches than anything with the exception of PS3 COD4 and MW2 online play.

While Sonic and SEGA are not doing very well anymore there are some who remember what he stands for Honour Courage and Justice and that is what Sonic will be remembered for by those who still believe.

Get the sonic the hedgehog mug.A game meant to celebrate Sonic's 15th anniversary and is notorious for its bad reviews. You'd expect a game like this to have a lot of time and effort put into it, but there wasn't. The game has terrible controls, long load times, mixed opinions on voice actors, although most people complained about Jason Griffith. Even if those problems were fixed, the storyline is pretty bad, including an implied romance between Sonic, a hedgehog, and Elise, a human. Odd. They rushed this game to make it closer to the Holiday season, but they obviously should've worked on it more.

Shadow debuted in Sonic Adventure 2 for the Sega Genesis and Nintendo Gamecube as the Ultimate Lifeform created 50+ years ago by Dr. Eggman's grandfather, Professor Gerald Robotnik on the Space Colony ARK. Though Shadow was designed to be a living weapon, his more secretive and primary purpose was to save the life of Professor Gerald's granddaughter, Maria, who was diagnosed with a very rare and life threatening disease. He never got to fulfill his purpose as G.U.N. suddenly shut down Project Shadow, and Maria was killed in the midst.
Despite his stoic and quiet front, Shadow is a very compassionate and lonely character. He's not an anti-hero or villain, but an ally who rivals Sonic's speed and skills. Rouge and Omega are his friends; he respects Sonic as an equal, if not a superior.
Unfortunately, with Sonic '06's massive failure, Sega decided to dumb down all of their characters and stories, and Shadow took the brunt of it, being shoved to the side and reduced to the joke his titular game presented him to be; a dark, angsty, over-the-top edge-lord loner who's too good for friends and hates Sonic because... reasons???
