Depends on who you ask and what year you are talking about. In 1996 or so when I was in high school we used the term emo to refer to bands like Sunny Day Real Estate, Remnant, and more well known bands like the Smashing Pumpkins. Now it is used to describe an entire MAINSTREAM culture of kids who think that they are going to get somewhere in life by being stupid. They usually talk about how counterculture they are unaware that emo is a manufactured image sold to them so that industries can make a dollar off of them by selling them records, hair products, clothing, and concert tickets.

Get the Emomug. An Off Shoot Of 80's Punk, emo is basically a more femine version of punk.
the word emo comes from the word emotive NOT emotional as most people seem to think.
Emo fashion is generally tight jeans, long fringe with the back short, the fringes vary in colour (common colours being red, blue and blonde) but the short spikes are 90% of the time black the rest of the time they have long plantinum blonde hair.
band tshirts and stripy clothing are the norm in emo fashion as is normal shirts that have been modified by them.
in general emos are either christian or athiest though there are a percent who like to fancy the idea of being satanist (but fail miserable as satanism fails)
emo music is made up of many good bands and also many SHIT bands...shit ones being hawthorne heights, the used and underoath. good emo bands are escape the fate, from first to last and atreyu.
emo has been around for ages but it comes and goes, each time slightly different.
a large percent of emo's claim to be bisexual, around a third of the time this isnt true they just think it makes them seem cool.
scene emos are annoy little twats, who piss me off endlessly.

Get the emosmug. Most emos are fake, poseur losers. Often hang out with groups of other 'emos'. May or may not be homosexual. Wear skinny jeans and guyliner. Whine about life, write dark poems on LiveJournal, and cut themselves. It is scarce you will ever see a real emo. Youtube search 'The Emo Song', to learn more about stereotypical/poser emos.
I'm an emo kid, non-comforming as can be. You'd be non-conforming too if you looked just like me. I have dye in my hair and makeup on my face, I'm almost emo enough to start shaving my legs.

Get the emomug. Emo is not short for the term emotional in this sense.Emo kids want to be differnt and don't follow mainstream like most people. They strive to be differnt. It is a genre of music which has been around since the 1970s and is not a trend just coming in! They are mostly depresses and hate the world and everyone in it!
