A cartoon from a specific country that is inspired by a specific type of cartoon from another country based on it's art style or other elements.

Western cartoons that are inspired by Japanese Anime is considered mongrel animation.

An unencumbered approach to animation that is more concerned with novelty, formal play, and personal expression over conventional or commercial approaches to the form.

As a category Experimental Animation is malleable, usually encompassing any approach to making Moving Images that doesn't fall within the industry standards of its moment. This includes cinematic, theatrical, digital, expanded, and gallery exhibition formats.

Can be shortened to "EA"

Robert - Hey Spicy and Helen, would you agree that Asparagus (1979) by Suzan Pitt is one of the best pieces of Experimental Animation that exists?

Spicy - Yes!! The part where she poops pieces of asparagus into the toilet really does it for me.

Helen - Totally some great American EA! The only thing that would've made it better is if it was Sand Animation.
