Telephone Tough-Guy

1. A person who has very mean and ruthless tones over the telephone.

2. One who exhibits characteristics of being a hardass over the telephone with any real muscle to back up their talk. Also makes threats over the phone with no intention of following though with them.

John: "Hey, you better quit fucking around with my sister or else..."

Jim: "Or else what?"

John: "I'm gonna break your legs and gouge out your eyes, fucker."

Jim: "Whatever, you're just a big pussy telephone tough-guy."

An oxymoron,refers to someone who trys acting tough, but is really as soft as a pussy.

This guy I know named Rap acts really tough around his other friends, but when he is by himself he is a pussy, therefore he is a tough pussy.

Time clock tough guy

An employee or employer on the clock who would never have guts to act or say such rude things off the clock.

Can you believe how hostile Keith acts towards new employees? If he said those comments off the clock he'd be clocked. He's definitely a time clock tough guy.

This was a Rodney Dangerfield line. He may or may not have coined it, but he made it uniquely his; he'd nervously adjust his tie while saying it.

A lot of his lines got into the wider lexicon, though younger people may not know who he was. He played the crazy ultra-rich guy in "Caddyshack".

"I told a cab driver to take me where the action was, and he took me to MY house!"

(No laughter)

(Nervously adjusts tie) "Oh, tough crowd, tough crowd..."

tough-talk

speaking in a tone intended to threaten your subject or audience, for the sole purpose of coercing them into believing or doing something; threaten. Common among politicians, law enforcement, gangsters, wiseguys, athletes, coaches, teachers. Best when used subtly.

Subtle tough-talk: (After being cut off by a freshly-licensed driver, at the red light, I got out of my car and went up to the driver's window). " You keep driving like that and someone's going to get hurt, and it isn't going to be me."

Overt tough-talk: "Oh, you don't understand me? No problemo, my fist speaks five languages."
