Sniff the pooch

The act of carefully and cautiously checking out a new person to decide if they're acceptable or not. Originates from the way dogs check each other out upon meeting.

I know you want your boy to come along but I'll have to sniff the pooch first and see if he's cool.

When I imagine an Italian sniff, I think of Lukaku on his back using Conte's shaven beansack as a punching bag.
