When there is drama involving a person or people you know so laughable, you gain genuine entertainment from watching it play out. It's almost movie-level drama, hence eating the popcorn.

"Yo, did you hear Stacy and Kevin started hooking up? That's gonna end horribly."
"Yeah I know, but it's actually hilarious. I think this is gonna end up as total popcorn material."
