Get the Running over hatchetmug. The fact that flight rhymes with fight may be why the term "fight or flight" is used. As clever and useful as it is, it is not factual. Thus,"fight or run away" might be a better way to express that unique state.

Get the fight or run awaymug. How you or someone you know goes through their well rehearsed, predictable set of behaviors and or reactions towards a specific occurance in the daily act of existing instead of owning up to the responsibility of their actions.
Kevin is late for class usually every day; finally the teacher just confronted him saying "just give it up already, you keep running your rackett on me hoping to smooth over the consequences of your tardiness" its NOT working dude!!
Teacher: Okay, its only the third day this week you have been late to class but its only Wednesday !
Kevin: Yeah, sorry, my car wouldn't start this morning.
Teacher on Thursday: You missed the quiz this morning on the skeletal muscles...
Kevin: You wouldnt believe it but I went out to my car and I had a flat tire

Get the sanda run dunmug. In the original Star Trek series, whenever the main engines (warp drive) broke down (which was pretty frequent) the Enterprise would only be able to move using "impulse engines" - a low power, sub-lightspeed manouvering system based on a small fusion ram/ion drive.
By inference, someone described as "running on impilse engines" or "impulse power only" is either:
1. Very tired (a.k.a. 'running on empty')
2. Genuinely ill
3. (derog.) Slow and/or stupid.

"Jesus, I've just had to brief the sales guys on the new product.... they're all running on impulse engies up there".
"You want to go for a beer ?"
"No, man, I'm running on impulse engines... got to go home and grab some sleep."

Get the running on impulse enginesmug. To drive with the gas light on for such a terrifyingly long amount of time you must be running on the pure belief of children. A reference to the movie Elf.
Person #1: "Dude, you need to stop for gas. You've been running on christmas spirit for almost an hour."
Person #2: "Nah, we're good. You just have to believe as the children do."
Person #1: "whatever, man."
