It’s starts by creating a “fursona”, which is an anthropomorphic character that they create that they will use online and just for creating art.
Then they can make or get something called a fursuit which is basically the same thing as cosplaying.
They are not people who have sex with animals.
They are not people who think they are an animal.
And they are not there for the sexual part of it. (Most of the time). At least any normal furry.
