the state a group of people fall into when supposedly out socialising but instead all are checking various applications on their smartphones.

the word has two possible roots. 1) asshole, where ass becomes app. 2) k-hole, term derived from the stupor people enter upon taking too much ketamine.

4 friends are out to dinner, conversation dies down when three of the party begin checking smartphones. 4th "have you all fallen into app-holes again?" often followed by the fourth person also then checking their smartphone
