LOL stands for laugh out loud. It is commonly used on Instant messengers and followed by a smiley face, such as : ) At times, someone will say something on IM and follow it with LOL to show that thjey are joking. Many people think that it is overused, and find it annoying.

Chatter 1: "I can't believe I tripped in the lunch line today!"
Chatter 2: "LOL : )"
