To take someone down a notch, you don't have to insult him. You just beat him at his own game.

A notch is a line of the eyebrow missing. How it occurs: a person claims that they will or could achieve something ludicrous. Notch is then called and if the action isn’t completed the person who stated the claim receives a notch.
