The term "Kmart realism" was originally meant to be insulting. Authors include Tao Lin, Chris Killen, Joy Williams, Ann Beattie, Frederick Barthelme, and (to a lesser extent) Sam Pink.

Get the Kmart by the Sea mug.A pick up method guys use to belittle girls in order to sleep with them. It works on the priniciple that girls want to prove to guys how classy they are, when it may not always be the case.
Guy - "hey"
Girl (not interested) - "hi"
Guy - "nice dress"
Girl - "thanks it's a ____(insert designer name here)"
Guy - "oh really? i saw on just like it at k-mart" (walks away)
Girl - (trying to prove a point, chases guy) "actually..."
*great conversation starter and keeper as it encourages the girl to try to prove her point to the carefree guy* - the kmart complex.

Kmart was originally founded in 1899 by Sebastian S. Kresge as S.S. Kresge Co.
When Kresge opened his first store in 1899, he sold everything for 5 and 10 cents. The low prices appealed to shoppers and allowed him to expand to 85 stores in 1912, with annual sales of more than $10 million.
In 2003 Kmart exited Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as Kmart Holding Corp and announced the merger with Sears in 2004.
The Company currently employs more than 133,000 associates, a far cry from the staff of 18 first employed at Kresge's five-and dime.
(i.e. a hell of a lot better than Wal-mart, note the definition about Wal-mart's edited CDs.)
