There are many definitions for this.

1. The opposite of down.
2. The sky
3. The clouds
4. The sun

5. Space

If you want to be boring, you can just say:

1. Good
2. Bad
3. Okay

Me: Hi

Mom: What's up?

Me: The opposite of down.

What's Up 

An extremely annoying phrase used by people who have never heard of "hello." Usually people ask this when they are bored, expecting the person they're asking to entertain them.

Guy: what's up?
other guy: *sigh* stop trying to make me entertain you.

What's Up?

1) The words that pop out of human's mouths when they desire to talk to you, but don't have the intelligence to think of something intelligent to say.
2) The words people say when they haven't taken a science class to realize that the sky is above them.
3) The words people say when they strongly desire to hear the response "nothing" or "not much".
4) The words people say when they are trying to make friends/trying to keep a friendship, but utterly failing.

Next time someone says these words to you, ask them which of the above was their purpose for saying it.

Used to ask an indiviudal how things are going. Can be responded to in urban settings by using the word Chillin or in Jamaica by saying Cool

A question about what another has his attention on. What is he thinking about or busy with? "Up" in this usage is referring to a slag from around the 1930s meaning: occupied with or busy with.

When I saw him he was angry so I asked "what's up?". But he would not tell me what he was angry about.

WHAT'S UP 

WHAT'S UP! is just a greeting not a question not asking anything just an aknowledgement/ greeting in passing and the only reply in that tone , you have to listen for the tone, is what's! up and keep it moving. Important listen for the tone.

walking down the street and see someone, eyes meet you both have things to do or nothing to do whatever the case you say, what's up! and you keep it moving. don't just say this in any situation you have to use your senses if you don't have any senses don't try it because if you aint feeling it or you convey it in the wrong way it could be misinscrewed in the wrong way that same what's up? could be a challange or a question in which case if you can't reach for your feelings or senses just say hi, that nuetralizes anything other then the greeting.
