hipster

The absolute scum of the earth. They only like things that are different and would refuse to be normal even if it meant the apocalypse would happen.
Hipster: OMG, you're drinking coffee? That is so mainstream. I only drink the finest ground coffee beans from one particular tree named Devin that is in the middle of Kenya.

Not a hipster: Oh, you're drinking coffee. Cool.

Hipster

One can either be a hipster or exhibit hipster tendencies.

Necessary Ingredients:

Skinny jeans, if you don't have any you can substitute leggings as a replacement. Off kilter music taste i.e. yeah yeah yeahs, m.i.a., people the average person hasn't heard of, and anything indie or considered weird. Usually art enthusiasts. Often pierced or tattooed. Shopping at 2nd hand stores and going thrifting is a way of life, Urban Outfitters is also a home away from home. Most parties include PBR. It's not unusual to see one with a bike. In addition, it helps if you top all of that off with a pair of glasses, you can use a variety but one's that resemble something that Kanye West owns or worn by a librarian in the 80s/80s inspired would work. Economically, some can be secret trust fun hoarders, some can be broke city dwellers, and some can fall right in the middle, it varies. Rejection of the mainstream is highly encouraged but whether or not all hipsters do that is arguable. Some are also fond of wearing a scarf or rag in with the previously stated look and MANY exist on tumblr.
2 Friends on the street.

Friend #1: I wonder how that kid can ride a bike with their pants being so tight?

Friend #2: Their probably a hipster.

Hipsters are basically tree-huggers with i-phones. Full of idiosyncracies, they dont even understand the numerous internal contradictions of their own (political) philosophy. For example, they think they are environmentally friendly, socially responsible and sustainable (whatever the fuck that means) and yet all of them have i-phones (as previsously stated). They dislike so called mainstream culture, capitalism and traditional (family) values. A lot of them went to college for a liberal arts degree, which explains all the bullshit they are saying all the time. Physically, they tend to be small. In short: They are the most fucked up cultural sub-group in the world.

Hipster

The epitome of a poser. A person in the teens, or 20s that thinks not being into mainstream stuff makes them cool. Usually stuff that was popular way before their time (i.e. cassettes). This group wasn't even thought of or old enough to remember the 80s, or 90s. Yet acts as if they're the supreme authority on both decades. Not realizing the stuff they like such as the fashion they wear was worn decades before. Unlike the 30+ crowd which actually grew up with cassettes, vcrs, denim high waisted shorts. So therefore can never be hipsters. These teenyboppers, and twenty something are posers. Also might add that hipsters, and bohemians aren't the same thing. Bohemians are artistically inclined, hipsters are just about image.
Teen 1: I'm so cool, look at me! I'm listening to a portable cassette player. I'm such a hipster!
30 something: So what? Thanks to Ebay, and Etsy. Anyone can buy one, and so what? I had the real thing when they were popular

hipster

Hipster is from the 1950s. He was educated, well-employed -- writer, artist, actor -- out of the mainstream. NYC hipsters lived in Greenwich Village (now the West Village). Many favored the non-gentrified Upper West Side. They wore tweed jackets with patches on the elbows, read Russians, avant-garde Brits and Americans. They flirted with left-wing politics, rejecting Communism, but liking Socialists or Trotskyists. They haunted MOMA and small film spaces like the Thalia on West 96th. Mainly white, hipsters loved classic and modern jazz by African-American artists: Lady Day, Ray Charles, Louis Armstrong, Nina Simone, the Modern Jazz Quartet, even Duke Ellington. They drove European sports cars, not necessarily for speed or power, but for artful handling in city traffic. Some hipsters rode Italian motor scooters, like Vespa or Lambretta. Back then hipsterdom was a male culture. Many original hipsters were closeted gay men. A woman became a hipster only by partnering with a hipster dude.

Around the beginning of this millennium, young artists, finding southern Manhattan too costly, migrated across the Billyburg Bridge to northern Brooklyn, bringing the old, almost-extinct East Village culture with them, and, not really knowing anything about Greenwich Village or the Upper West Side a half century earlier, revived the word hipster. It has no relation to the original meaning, except to cite a group that isolates itself from, or considers itself better than, the mainstream.
The dive off West 125th Street was haunted by pimps, off-duty whores, and this hipster who kept playing Lady Day on the jukebox.

On a hot night, with all the windows open on West 4th or Bleecker, all you hear are Nina Simone and Ray Charles from apartments of insomniac hipsters listening to Symphony Sid on the radio.

The hipster in his classic Ferrari registered for the annual Auto Rallye.

How the fuck can that Billyburg dude call himself a fucking hipster and say he never heard of Bessie Smith and how she died?

hipster

Ok, so most of the definitions of this word circulating are wrong. Yes I said it. The word hipster stems from the word hip. It is safe to say that 'hip' can be defined as 'what is cool right now'. A hipster can be defined as a person that adopts fashion, music taste, behaviours, blablah of what is considered 'cool right now'. It's just logic. Just Google "define: hipster" and you shall see that I am not talking utter bullshit. So anyone saying a hipster is trying to be 'independent' and striving for 'individuality' and is somewhat 'unique' or what ever crap I hear, you are wrong.
A hipster is a person that involves themselves with a popular scene. So now we have to understand that a 'popular scene' is subjective to the area you live in. So where I come from (england) a hipsters traits are as follows: chino jeans, listen to house music such as 'Swedish House Mafia' and 'Skrillex', vest tops, fake tan (men and women), identical to all of their friends, watch Jersey Shore, Georgie Shore, TOWIE and other crap like that. Paradoxically, the most defining trait of a 'hipster' are those that throw around the word 'hipster' its self because using the word 'hipster' is actually what is popular at the moment. So if you like to use the word hipster, you my friend are a HIPSTER. Yes, it is obvious I am going to get a lot of thumbs down on this definition because most people are just ignorant. However, I have matured to learn that people are dumb and don't listen to reason or logic.
WRONG USE - "Yo, that guy in the flannel shirt with a fleet foxes band shirt underneath and the old film camera round his neck is a massive hipster."

RIGHT USE - "That young fellow there that looks like he dropped out of school and had to do his GCSEs at college and now in a dead end job; slaving away to some fat rich person behind a desk. He seems to spend the majority of his life projecting his own problems on to other people that are above him in society, sleeping around with as many women as possible in order to raise his rank in his cave man attitude driven friendship group. His vest, chinos, comb over and fake tan make him look very hipster!"

You, for reading ironic, pseudo-intellectual dictionary entries on the word "hipster".
