Splitting a video container, like AVI into its individual streams and store the streams in individual files.
The practical reason is to extract an audio or subtitle track from a video. The process of adding those streams again is called muxing, removing or adding streams in-place is called remuxing.

A: I really want that audio track from this video file
B: Demux the video and just take it.
