What people think it is: self harm, depression and everything is black
What it actually is: spinning around to your favorite song from My Chemical Romance, Green Day, or Taking Back Sunday till you fall over exhausted and ponder what you're doing with your life. You wear mostly dark colours, (not necessarily black), listen to emo, screamo, or punk bands. You don't have to cut either. If an emo does, that's for a completely different reason (unless they are a fake wannabe emo). They are like everyone else but they like their music to have meaning and they pay attention the darker sides of things, not just the ideal sides.

Yes, I'm an emo, but that doesn't make me any different than the next person. Maybe just a little bit darker.

Get the Emo mug.A subculture in which you can see people wearing lots of black, ripped clothing with black hair, eyeliner, and piercings. They do not seem to care what other people think a lot of the time and wear lots of dark clothing. They generally have an aura of depressiveness and/or angst about them and can be antisocial all of the time or sometimes because of their nature or personal experiences in their past. Emo music is generally music that has an underlying message of hating oneself, or hating what they have become or talking about death, self harm, or other forms of pain. It is typically a bit softer than hard rock, but more hardcore than pop or easy listening rock. Emos also typically self harm themselves, mainly because they are of the mindset that they hate themselves. Obviously not every emo self harms, and not every emo self harms for that reason, but it is very common.
An emo should NOT be mistaken as the same thing as a goth. Goths wear lots of vampirical dress, and are generally more interested in the evil, satanic sort of thing. Emos are upset at themselves or the world and are closed off, they aren't necessarily unfriendly though, lots of emos I know are very nice, but they are typically not the type to be all outgoing and bubbly.

I'm an emo, I wear thick eyeliner and I cry alone in my room everyday, and if you have a problem with me then leave because I have been through enough hell to deal with you.

Get the Emo mug.An emotional person who is melancholic about his/her life.
Sometimes it's because of being broken-hearted, depressed, pessimistic and also being so cynical.

Get the Emo mug.Emos are stereotyped as people who have dark hair (usually black) that covers most of their face, they wear black eyeliner, black nail polish, converse, skinny jeans or"girl pants",&tight shirts(usually band t's).People think they listen to bands considered to be"emo"&think emos are depressed all the time&are suicidal&self-harm..Totally untrue. Not all emos are like that.Emos are people who feel emotions very strongly.Hint: emo=emotion.Whether it be happy, sad, mad, etc. They listen to whatever they want to&they don't have to dress or look a certain way!Yes, a lot of them may look like a stereotypical emo kid, but they're just wearing what they want. Sometimes they express themselves through clothing and makeup.Others do the same thing. Also, not all emos cut. Some do,some don't.Cutting(one of the many forms of Self-Harm),beingsuicidal,writing,going off alone, anything else you all would label as"emo"behaviors, they do it as a way to express their emotion or release what they feel&just because someone cuts it doesn't mean they're emo(people do it to cope with depression, just like people use alcohol to cope with it,and they need help.So next time you hear of someone harming themselves, think twice before you call them"a whiny emo fag"or something because that's what bullies do and we all need to stop bullying). Not all emos listen to"emo"bands and singers and wear dark clothing all the time and darkmakeup and shitand are depressed all the time. Stop stereotyping people.
Me: "If you all can't see what emo is by reading my definition, then I don't know what to do.
Two things I'd like to say though:
1.) Stop stereotyping people.
2.) Stop bullying emos...And don't just stop bullying emos. Stop bullying gays, people with disabilities, people you all label as 'nerds', people who self harm...Stop bullying EVERYONE. You don't know what people are going through. Their lives are hard enough and they don't need you to make it worse because you could drive them to suicide (which isn't funny AT ALL)."
