In the grocery business it is often used as a threat to underperforming employees in a derogatory way. It is in some circles thought to be a step down from a job that you already have . It is often used when someone is fired in a grocery store.
Hey man I heard the boss called you on the carpet about how bad you were at stocking the shelves. Joe in Frozen Food said he overheard him saying “ I’ll have you on a Chip Route unless you straighten up and do better” and “they’ll call you Chipper”
