wankin the terms of it being terrible. Hipster Wank is a term to describe bad art work using a medium that is outdated or just old. Hipsters are the ones who tend to use an out dated medium. They use it because they think it makes their art work better or they use it to show their different. You can see this on Instagram by simply looking at the hashtag “film is not dead”.
Person 1: “mate look at this photography”
Person 2: “yeah that’s a good example of hipster wank. Shooting in 35mm film doesn’t make your photography good”

A person with several tattoos on their arms, legs or torso who may wear black rimmed glasses and a beanie could be said to have bad hipster rash. People riding fixies and those working in cafes are in the high risk category for hipster rash.

Originally intended to be a word to describe individuals with "alternative" (as opposed to "mainstream") tastes in art and culture (and they explicitly suggest it by the way they dress etc) . However the modern adaptation of it is used very liberally. Two individuals can be each other's "hipster" if they have opposite tastes in art and culture. It is also used as a retaliation against less known art which have fan following from art critics by some people who can't relate to it.
I read a review of an album on some well known website or magazine. It has great reception. I listen to that album for myself but I don't really enjoy it. But I feel paranoid that so many other love it. Thus I declare these people as "hipsters" so I can feel that I have superior taste in music.
