Usually morning coffee break. Still used on the waterfront in New England fishing towns particularly Gloucester, MA. Term was used in the movie Captains Corageous ( 1925, Spenser Tracy ) to add local flavor to this movie about the hard life of the Gloucester fishermen.

This behavior is most often displayed by a dad at a restaurant when other family members have food left on their plate, but also extends to the average weeknight dinner table, snacks, ingredients for a meal, or beverages. This behavior is not solely limited to dads either, and may be exhibited by any person regardless of gender, orientation, or current number of children.
a) "I'm going to dad up on this leftover bolognese."
b) "We've run out of taco shells, so it's time to dad up and eat this extra taco meat and shredded lettuce."
c) "I can't finish my beer. Do you want to dad up on it?" "Sure, but let me finish mine first."
