Originado no subreddit r/Silksong, tudo começou com uma imagem da personagem Hornet da série de vídeo-jogos Hollow Knight, fumando um cigarro, com a legenda "Bait used to be believable", mas, como Loss, foi sendo simplificado, até se tornar "-Y".
Existem algumas alternativas também, como "-|", o mais conhecido, "-K", "-V", "-y" e etc.
