verbal identity

the part of a corporate identity that can be expressed in words - usually including values, vision statement, proposition, positioning, brand promise, key characteristics, tone of voice. It underpins the visual parts of the identity such as logos, colourways, graphic architecture etc.

We need to make sure the verbal identity is in place before we invite design agencies to tender.

Bland Identity

When someone/a company creates a new brand identity and it is boring and blah (bland) - doesn't do anything for the brand and is pretty much worse than the brand was to begin with.

Customer 1: Did you notice the new logo for that computer store.
Customer 2: Yeah man, but it's boring. They didn't do anything to it. All they did was get themselves a new bland identity. They'll go under in a month.

When a user-member on the BeatYourTruck.com forum can't decide on a permanent avatar and so eludes to a recurring format of unfamiliar and somewhat uncomfortable recognition.

At first I didn't recognize that avatar, but upon closer inspection it turns out that noob moderator has a mixed identity.

man a) my niece, who lives with me since she ran away from home a few years ago due to my alcoholic of a brother, was accepted to Yale to study biochemistry. however, i can't afford the tuition. what can i do?

man b) i know i sound a bit esoteric, but would you remember the movie Stealing Harvard?

man a) um, yeah, sort of. Why du ask?

man b) I plan on helping your niece by reenacting the scenario from the movie Stealing Harvard.

man a) Are you fucktarded?

man b) no. i think my idea is an idea with merit.

man a) okay, you are entitled to your opinion, but the Unforgiveables don't think so, therefore i don't want to implement your idea.
