The significantly better brother of the Mario Brothers (yes, they're both named Mario. Mario Mario and Luigi Mario), portrayed as a 'scaredy-cat' yet went through VARIOUS mansions, skyscrapers, parks, hotels, etc., taking on all of them and WINNING. Along with this, he is more fit than mario, being able to jump significantly higher than Mario, his brother. Nintendo generally attempts to portray Mario as better, but as the years as passed (especially after the year of Luigi), Luigi has slowly grown a significantly large fanbase, even outgrowing Mario's at times. But, giving Mario some slack, he's a good brother.
