An action of cowardice. Based on war times, one would shoot themselves in the foot in order to get out of fighting and be sent back home. Commonly regarded as dishonourable.
I asked my brother "Are you going to shoot yourself in the foot?". He did. He is now regarded as an outcast by all of his colleagues
