It can mean a lot of different things as you can see. My definition of "Emo" is someone who is Emotional. What i mean by this is one person (guy or girl) being overly emotional over one thing. It can be overly happy or overly mad and the most common one is overly sad. I must add that not all Emo's cut! In fact this is commonly confused with depression or suicidal thoughts. Some may because its the stereo type or because they have depression but also act this way. In fact Emo has become confused by so many things.
That girl/guy is overly emo about getting an A on the test.

Get the Emo mug.Bands like My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy and Panic! At The Disco are not emo and emos need to know this. They're pretty good bands, I listen to them all the time...BUT they're not emo. I hate to have to give in to conformity and say that I am emo but personally, if I were being told about this kind of stuff by someone who wasn't emo, and didn't have the experience of participation, then I would find it hard to believe them. I don't cut, I don't cry all the time, I don't sit around feeling sorry for myself. I normally go out whenever I can and get totally drunk and enjoy myself. Emo is not about following the apparent stereotypes of the mainstream audience, it's about expressing the way you look and act through the emotive hardcore music scene. Emotive hardcore bands include:

But this is no reason to say that the emo stereotype doesn't exist.
Because if it didn't exist, we wouldn't have the emo kids.
Generally, when Emo comes to mind, people think of band logo t-shirts, tight skinny jeans, and assymetrical black hair.
But emo is not about the look, nor the style. It's a lifestyle and way of thinking.
Not depression. Not suicidal.
You have many people classified as preps and jocks and other labels that can be depressed and have suicidal thoughts.
Many of the emo friends I have are cheery and artistic.
And, oh get this, their emotions are quite in check.
