It is important to note that the mafia has changed over time. The most famous mafia is La Costa nostra although there are others. They are comprised of 5 families in New York, the Chicago outfit and a few other families across the states. Originally they were made as a brotherhood to protect Italian American shop owners from racist thieves. Eventually they got into organised crime. It is important to note that most mafia’s nowadays and back then didn’t kill nor harm “civilians”(anyone who’s not part of it) and nowadays due to law enforcement they work in the background instead of on the streets
