Anti-realism of the Laws of Physics

A philosophical position holding that the laws of physics are not descriptions of an independent reality but rather human constructions—useful tools for prediction, elegant summaries of regularities, or convenient fictions that help us navigate experience. Anti-realism about physical laws asserts that electrons, forces, and fields are concepts, not things; that equations describe our experience, not reality-in-itself; that scientific success doesn't require truth, just empirical adequacy. This position draws on the history of theory change (past theories were "true" but abandoned), underdetermination (multiple theories fit the same data), and the recognition that observation is theory-laden. Anti-realism doesn't deny that science works; it just denies that working proves correspondence to an independent reality. The laws are our maps, not the territory.

Scientific-Epistemological Realism

The belief that the entities, laws, and structures described by successful scientific theories (like electrons, natural selection, or gravitational waves) are real, mind-independent features of the world, and that science progressively uncovers this objective truth. Theories may change, but they converge on an accurate description of reality "as it is."

Example: A scientific-epistemological realism believes that DNA existed and carried genetic information long before humans discovered it. The shift from Newtonian physics to Einsteinian relativity wasn't a change of arbitrary stories, but a closer approximation to the actual fabric of spacetime. When physicists talk about the Higgs boson, they're not just describing a useful calculation tool; they believe it's a real particle their instruments actually detected.

Pragmatic Anti-realism

The position that it is meaningless or pointless to talk about a reality completely independent of our conceptual schemes and practical engagements. What we call "truth" or "reality" is constituted by what works for us within our forms of life. There is no "God's-eye view" to compare our useful theories to; the only criteria for judgment are coherence, utility, and fruitfulness within our human practices.

Example: For a Pragmatic Anti-realist, saying "electrons exist" means "using the concept of 'electrons' allows us to build functioning computers, predict chemical reactions, and communicate successfully with other scientists." Confirmation Bias Realism

The pragmatic, Kant-informed position that while our reality is indeed filtered through innate and learned biases, this is realism for us. We cannot escape our confirmatory frameworks, so the "real" world is the one we collaboratively construct and confirm through shared biases (cultural, scientific, linguistic). Truth is a high-stability confirmation bias agreed upon by a community.

Example: The scientific method is the ultimate expression of confirmation bias realism. It doesn't claim to find bias-free truth, but a stable, inter-subjective truth by making our biases (hypotheses) explicit and rigorously testing them against a shared reality, creating a consensus confirmation that we accept as "real."
