Don't you ever, ever call emo punk. You are horribly misunderstood.
Emo - Girl pants, cotton sweater, itchy scarf, converse. long black hair covering the face. Sad attitude, wrist slitter.

Punk - Tight jeans, leather jacket/denim jacket, studs, Black Boots. Multi colored hair, Liberty spikes, Mohawk, etc. Never sad, always happy, always partying.

Emos are emotional, not humans who cut themselves. Emos can be emotionally depressed, emotionally disturbed, or just emotional about things.
"I cut myself, so I must be emo!", "No, emos don't cut themselves, that's what a cutter does! I am emotional about... stuff, so I am emo, not you.".

Emo is just a word. It loosely describes a group of people that are inspired by music, have an alternative dress sense but cannot be called Goths or Punks. Emo is a new sub-culture of fashion and being that draws influence from predecessors' best bits whilst retaining its individuality. Usually it's only parents that mistake an 'Emu' for a Goth.

Emos are similar to punks in that they are not apologetic about dressing differently, although you're probably less likely to get headbutted for offending one. One aspect of Emo culture is the friendships between them and the way they appreciate one other. Whilst some peer groups condemn someone for daring to change or look different. Emo can be casual but bright; with contrasting colours and prints like a Nu-Punk Contrast, or can be darker, smarter and more sophisticated but with an elaborate edge.

The people involved in it didn't wake up one morning and think 'I want to be an Emo'. Emo isn't any particular fashion trend; it can be everything and nothing - its an attitude.

Taking risks isn't without its risks though, obviously, Emos are marked as targets of abuse for being different. Some people have to stereo-type things to understand them, others want to bring it down to its base level and others want to destroy what is different.
Stereotypical Emo - A person who wears skinny jeans, different shirts, and usually have black hair that is swept-ed across the face, or hair that covers or hovers over one of the eye.

Emo is a social movement entirely ripped off from other social movements that came before.

Some would argue better movements, because it could at least be claimed it hadn't been done before or was an improvement upon established social movements.
Goth: Already did the dark clothing, makeup, hair, chains, jewelry, sad, poetic, down beat, quirky, artistic, (You get my drift)...

Punk: Edgy, angst, angry, political, emotional, DIY, anti-establishment, hard, loud, aggressive,

Mod: Tight clothing, jeans, shirts, sneakers, haircuts, upbeat, fast, angst ridden,

New Wave: The Flock of Seagulls haircut, black and white striped clothing, dark, angst, unrequited love, pop, emotional

Ok, emo guys gay thing #1. To pansy enough to make it into the skater/metal/goth scene, so do the manly thing, and cut their jeans to make them look like girl pants. Gay thing #2, cover half their acne rippled face with greasy, unwashed hair because it's the less conformist thing to do. Gay thing #3, cutting yourself. Look, every suicide attempt I hear about is some idiot, who cuts themselves along the wrists instead of down the inside of the forearm. You just do it for attention cause you know that behind the mascara, tight pants, checkered shoes, middle class life, you pretend that life sucks and you have it so bad. Grow up, just because your mom and dad are still together, you have a new car, and your parents give you money to spend on razors, your life isn't that bad. Look at some of the hoods and ghettos some people live in. Do you see any of them with long hair or tight pants. No. Do you want to know why? Because they actually have to fight to survive and there's more important things to do than cut yourself, like feed your family and figure out where your going to get money to shelter your loved ones.
EMO - cutting myself relieves the pain of life.
NORMAL PERSON - oh really, last time I checked when I cut myself it hurt.

EMO - Mom's minivan is less conformist than the school bus.
NORMAL PERSON - I ride the bus cause I'm not afraid to stick up for myself if anyone picks on me.
