The homesickness and nostalgia for the old, pre-colonised Wales; a longing to return to an identified and recognised homeland which has been lost forever. Does not refer to a homesickness for a fantasy place or a homesickness for any place outside of Wales. This misinterpretation is because many foreign languages cannot ever be fully translatable into the English language as they have links to personal and cultural connections.
"I love the world of Hogwarts so much, I feel a Hiraeth for it, I wish I could go there."
"Hogwarts isn't in Wales so that's not possible. You can use the English word homesickness, there's nothing wrong with that."
"...B-But that doesn't sound 'Exotic' enough for my aesthetic tumblr tattoo."

As soon as I arrive here, my hiraeth disappears. This place feels familiar. This is home. The place I’d never thought I’d ever see again.

Welsh uncountable noun.
- A nostalgic longing for a place.
It can also be used for places that once existed that have now changed or disappeared.
However, It is not used to refer to people, nor is it used for places that don't exist or never have (such as a fantasy or dream land).
- Addition by native Welsh speaker from Gwynedd.
Please don't listen to other definitions as most of them are nonsense. The word is frequently over romanticised, twisted or made to be more poetic or more exclusive than it is by people who don't speak the language and who spread misinformation. They are people who generally want to find an extra special word that suits their own wishes & needs instead of accepting its true authentic meaning.

In Welsh, we would say 'I have hiraeth for the hills where I grew up' 'I have hiraeth for home' 'I have hiraeth for the village where I grew up'.

Hiraeth is the best Taekook fanfiction ever, written by haruday on AO3. It will make you cry and cry. It will hurt you so deeply, you will feel it in your heart, your bones, all over your body.
-"Nat I can't sleep. I can't stop thinking about Hiraeth! It hurts!"
-"Same Angel, I know baby try to relax. It hurts so bad. Vin still hasn't recovered and she finished it weeks ago."
-"True guys, I still think about it everyday it HURTS. Please finish it, I want someone to talk about it with!"
-"We are trying but it's so painful we need breaks. We just CAN'T CONTINUE SOMETIMES."

Hiraeth is a longing for one's homeland, but it's not mere homesickness. It's an expression of the bond one feels with one's home country when one is away from it.
