Most people still live in an in person reality and not a virtual reality, no matter what technology is available, or what diseases have spread to where. That isn't going to change as long as people are still mostly human and not inhuman.

If people never question what they see, hear, or read, everything seems more exciting, colorful, or like a bigger deal than it actually is in reality, whether it's a movie, the news, or a book. A movie, show, book, or song that was really closely based on reality would bore most people within minutes, and that wouldn't be as profitable as making something or someone that isn't really too interesting sound interesting, exciting, and colorful.
