Slowly giving up and losing interest in an endeavor; gradually showing a lack of enthusiasm for a formerly promising venture
In the early 18th century, the island of Nassau in the Bahamas had no governor. Pirates such as Edward "Blackbeard" Teach, Benjamin Hornigold, Calico Jack Rackham, Charles Vane, etc. took hold there and it became a pirate haven. In 1718, however, the British sent Woodes Rogers to become the governor of Nassau, and the pirates provided little resistance. They had Nassaued their idea for a pirate republic free from the control of kings.
