The term 'catfish' is when somebody online makes a fake account and talks to people but their identity is basically hidden. So they might use a different name and take photos from other people in order to keep their true identity concealed. But the actual words 'cat' and 'fish' come together because cat is another word for pussy. So basically people are too pussy to reveal their true selves. As for fish, when things seem fishy, it means it's sorta sketchy and not reliable. So that's why i believe 'catfish' is called 'catfish'

Catfish or plural catfishes is the term used for when a person takes up a fake or stolen identity on any online platforms ranging from Facebook to omegle to use for a laugh or a creepy relationship. Catfishes could be a 56 year old man called Kieth with a mortgage and an unhappy marriage or just your average bored teenage boy using it for a laugh
